The Secret

Reviews | April 2019

April started off as a really good reading month, but ended up not being so great towards the end because that's when I went into a reading slump that I couldn't really get out of it. I spent this month trying to catch up to my Goodreads goal so I read a lot of shorter books. It would've worked out if I kept it up but unfortunately, life had other plans. But, reviews! Reviews Bossman by Vi Keeland I don't know what it was about this book that didn't do it for me. I really thought this was going to be another one of those steamy books I love, but for the most part, it was okay. I think the past vs. present story line wasn't something I really enjoyed. While I get that the author was trying to show the tragic past of the male protagonist, I felt like it was dragged on too long. It could've been told as a prologue and then I would've felt more attachment seeing his side of the story as well. I found this to be a little predictable and overall meh in the sex...

I've Moved!

Yes. This is basically how I dance. So much skill you're just jealous .  But you'll understand soon enough because.... Drumroll please . .. ... .. . .. ... .. . Yes, yes. I've finally made the move to Wordpress.  I will always miss my blogging roots (sorta. Blogger kinda sucks now comparatively) but I've wanted to move for SO long. It's been a constant back and forth because it's not free (money, you know how it goes). But, I finally decided, what the heck. You never know till you try, right? I know I've been absent from blogging lately, partly due to my schedule, but partly due to the fact that I just wasn't happy with my blog. I kept trying to update it and it was difficult and annoying and there were quite a few things I was unable to do. At least with free templates. My lack of excitement about my little corner of the internet led to me not being motivated to write anything because I wasn't proud of my blog and that's a problem.  But, thanks ...

The One Where I Introduce Myself for Armchair BEA 2015

It's that time of year again. The time when book bloggers, authors and all bookish fans get together in the NYC for the great meet and greet known as BEA. For those of us not lucky enough (read: poor college student) to attend the real life version of BEA, there is the great internet version known as Armchair BEA so that we unlucky folk can get a taste of the great big BEA in our own little corner of the internet.  1. Tell us a bit about yourself: How long have you been blogging? Where are you from? How did you get into blogging? I actually started blogging  wayyyyyy  back in January of 2012 (I feel so old at this moment....). I accidentally came across one while looking for a book recommendation online and just kept finding more and more. I thought it seemed like a lot of fun, the community is great, and I just  like to  spread my opinion, so I created it on a whim. Even though I've had this blog for a good long while I've taken a lot of lengthy.....breaks...

Review | I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga

I was intrigued by this book because I am a fan of Lyga's previous work, which I adored. Having just finished off watching the entire show of Dexter and feeling more than a little unsatisfied with how things were concluded (that finale was terrible, am I right ?!) I turned to I Hunt Killers to continue my thriller/horror binge. The first thing I noticed, which I didn't know before starting the book is that Jasper "Jazz" Dent is in fact, not a killer hunter (at least, not the way Dexter is.) We get a clear understanding from the start that he is the son of a very infamous killer, and that now that his dad is behind heavily guarded bars, he is trying to live an almost-normal life. This is obviously impossible for a few reasons, but the main one is that the townspeople expect him to become like Dear Old Dad. When bodies start turning up, especially when the victims are murdered in strikingly similar way as his father's victims, people begin to assume that maybe Ja...

Author Interview with Juliana Stone (Some Kind of Normal Blog Tour)

Today we have Juliana Stone here for an author interview! This interview is part of the blog tour for her newest release, Some Kind of Normal. 1. Without spoiling anything, could you tell us what was your favorite scene to write in   Some Kind of Normal? Ah, that’s easy! (kinda because I’ve got two!) The scene at the drive-in really hit home to me, when Everly is surrounded by hundreds of kids but has never felt more alone. I remember feeling like that. 2. If you had to pair up your main character Lucy with any other character from any other YA book (either romantically or as a friend), who would it be and why? I think Caleb from Simone Elkeles’s book Leaving Paradise . They both have secrets and trauma and are involved with girls who have the same. They could totally support each other I think. 3. What comes easier for you - dialogue or description? Dialogue hands down. I love writing dialogue and spend half of my time at home talking as I write! My daughter thinks I’m sorta crazy...

Review | Fairest of All by Serena Valentino

Title:   Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen  by Serena Valentino Series: Villains Genre: YA - Retellings Publication: August 18th 2009 by Disney Press Format: Hardcover Source: Purchased Rating: ★☆☆☆☆ Synopsis: The tale of the young princess and her evil stepmother, the Wicked Queen, is widely known. Despite a few variations from telling to telling, the story remains the same—the Queen was jealous of the girl’s beauty, and this jealousy culminated in the Queen’s attempt on the sweet, naive girl’s life. Another tale far less often spoken of is the one that explains what caused the Queen to become so contemptuously vile. Still, some have attempted to guess at the reason. Perhaps the Queen’s true nature was that of a wicked hag and her beautiful, regal appearance a disguise used to fool the King. Others claim that the Queen might have hated the girl for her resemblance to the King’s first wife. Mostly, the Queen is painted as a morally abhorrent woman who never lov...

Author Interview: Jennifer Salvato Doktorski (The Summer After Me and You Blog Tour)

Today we have Jennifer Salvato Doktorski here for an author interview! This interview is part of the blog tour for her newest release, The Summer After Me and You . 1. I love books set in the summer, like How My Summer Went Up in Flames and The Summer After You and Me . What makes you want to set your stories in the summer? I didn’t plan it that way, but this is my third novel set in the summer! When you write a book, you spend a lot of time “living” your story. The characters feel like real people, and the setting feels like a real place. This particular story was written between September and March and I have to say, as the months turned colder, it was nice to be living at the warm Jersey Shore—inside my head at least. There were many times that I forgot there was snow on the ground until I looked up from my laptop and remembered it was winter. 2. If you had to pair up your main character Lucy with any other character from any other YA book (either romantically or as a friend), who ...
